Port Imperial Ferry Terminal

A key component in the development of the Hudson River Ferry Service between New Jersey and Manhattan, the Port Imperial Ferry Terminal combines architectural design and marine engineering. IBI Group provided architectural services for the 33,000 sq. ft., award-winning intermodal terminal.

The terminal serves as the New Jersey gateway from the New York Ferry Terminal, facilitating interconnections with the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail System. It is designed to accommodate for the anticipated future growth of the Weehawken ferry passenger commuter service, serving approximately 20,000 commuters each day.

The 21,000 sq. ft. first floor is devoted to passenger service functions, including ticket counters, retail shops, a café and waiting room. The second floor contains an additional waiting room and operational facilities for the New York Waterway.

The project involved a public-private partnership and was one of seven demonstration projects authorized by the Federal Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) to receive federal funding for a project development.

As a major commuter facility, Port Imperial Ferry Terminal has been designed to significantly reduce tunnel and bridge traffic while providing a comfortable and stress-free trip.
